Sterling Heights
Michigan
Macomb County runs on routine, and most of those routines trace back to the plants. Sterling Heights and Warren filled up after the war, as autoworkers followed Chrysler and Ford north along Van Dyke, turning farmland into brick ranches. That industrial weight still holds. Shift times at the Stellantis assembly plant set the pace, and coffee shops along Gratiot open early enough to catch first-shift traffic. Families in Clinton Township and Fraser grab pizza on the way back from weeknight practices at the same spots their parents used. Italian bakeries in Warren and Roseville move cannoli and butter cookies by the pound on weekends, especially when somebody's hosting. East of Groesbeck, the feel shifts. St. Clair Shores sits along Lake St. Clair, where side streets end at canal walls and morning light comes off flat water. Mount Clemens, the old county seat, keeps its walkable downtown.
