Smithtown - Stony Brook
New York
Every kid in Smithtown hears the bull story. Richard Smith rode one around all the land he wanted in 1665, or so it goes, and a bronze statue on Jericho Turnpike is here to prove it. Most of the town came after the war, houses and schools and the kind of errands you do before noon on a Saturday. But the villages are the part people actually talk about. Maureen's Kitchen does breakfast on Terry Road, cash only. People drive in and the wait is just part of it. The cheese shop in Stony Brook Village turns into twenty minutes because someone behind the counter keeps cutting samples. Port Jefferson is on the harbor side, built on shipyards that closed a generation ago. The ferry to Connecticut still runs. A plant shop on East Main keeps its door propped open and half the people inside are milling around inside seeming without a purpose. It’s just that kind of place.
