Shelby Township

Michigan

Building Enrollment

This stretch of Macomb County grew up around the auto industry and never really stopped. Shelby Township was farmland until midcentury, when families working in plants farther south began buying lots where the orchards used to be. That pattern pushed through Macomb Township and into Chesterfield, and it is still going. The neighborhoods range from 1970s ranches to subdivisions built last year, and people tend to stay. What holds the area together is not any single downtown but a network of corner spots and plazas that families return to every week. Pizza is serious in this part of Metro Detroit, and most households have a standing opinion about which shop gets the Friday call. The bakeries run steady around holidays, but the weekday line for a bumpy cupcake is its own proof of loyalty. Breakfast spots fill early on Saturdays, parents and kids still in ball caps from the morning game at Stony Creek.
