Rockville Centre

New York

Building Enrollment

Rockville Centre has been a village since 1893, named after a Methodist preacher who held services under a rock ledge out near what's now the parish. The South Shore has a lot of small downtowns strung along the train line, but most of them thin out after a block or two. This one doesn't. The bakery on Front Street has a line before the door opens and sells out by noon. A few blocks over, the ice cream shop doesn't rotate its flavors much because nobody asks it to. People walk there for dinner, walk home after, and do it again later in the week. The cafe crowd is regulars. Same spots, no rush, half of them not going anywhere in particular. Lynbrook and Oceanside are right next door and have their own rhythms, but Rockville Centre is where people end up when they want to stay close to home and still feel like they went somewhere. Three square miles and enough going on to last for generations.
