Prince George’s County
Maryland
Prince George's County grew up next to DC and turned into something completely its own. Federal jobs brought people out here starting in the sixties and seventies, and they stayed, which is why so much of the county feels well established. Upper Marlboro has been the county seat since 1792 and still has a small-town pace even with everything else built up around it. Hyattsville has its own thing going on, with more coffee shops and studios. These days, storefronts turn over into something interesting and new every couple of years. Bowie is quieter, more settled. The kind of place where a bakery doesn't need a sign out front because the regulars already know. Largo and Landover have casual eateries that have been on the same corners long enough that the lunch crowd just shows up and orders without looking at a menu. People pick their spots, keep going back, and don't feel the need to explain why. PG isn't trying to be DC. That's the whole point.
