Garden City
New York
Garden City was a planned community before the term existed. A.T. Stewart bought the land in 1869 and laid it all out, and the village still looks like someone thought about it. Most people get to the city by LIRR, and the schedule shapes everything, including morning coffee. Franklin Avenue has the pizza place that's been there long enough to not need a website or a Google Review and a bagel shop where the weekend line moves fast because everyone already knows what they're getting. Seventh Street has the boutiques and the newer spots, but the bakery around the corner from it has been doing the same thing for years and still sells out by noon. The towns around Garden City, Mineola, Westbury and Hempstead all run at their own pace, but the LIRR ties the whole area together. People commute on the same train, eat at the same places near the station, and stop pretending they'll try somewhere new.
