DeLand - Deltona
Florida
DeLand is a college town that never outgrew itself. Stetson University has been here since 1883, back when the place was called Persimmon Hollow and most people were trying to grow oranges. The citrus money left after a particularly bad freeze, but the school stayed, and that shaped everything after. Woodland Boulevard runs through downtown with the kind of storefronts you actually want to walk past. People stop into the coffee roasters before work or class without giving it much thought. The bakeries do steady morning business with regulars who have opinions about which pastry case is worth crossing the street. Gift shops lean toward the handmade and locally sourced, and they hold on because Stetson families and longtime residents keep showing up despite the convenience of I-4. South of campus, the oaks get thicker, and the blocks get quieter, while the stretch toward Orange City feels like a place altogether.
