Most mornings in McHenry and Kane County start the same way. Someone pulls into a bakery they've been going to for years and orders without looking at the menu. Woodstock's square still feels like the center of gravity on that side of the region, a place where people walk to lunch and stay longer than planned. Crystal Lake is different. The lake pulls routines outdoors, and the businesses nearby lean casual and repeat-visit friendly. Elgin carries more visible history in its brick blocks, and the casual eateries there have gotten sharper, run by families who've put real roots down. Algonquin fills in the gaps with enough of its own spots that people don't always drive somewhere else. Breweries have become genuine gathering places across the corridor, weeknight stops after practice or a long shift. The area grew up around rail lines and farmland, and you can still read that in how the towns sit along the river. What holds it together is that people stay loyal to the places they find.
