Brighton - Fenton
Michigan
People out here name their town by whichever downtown they drive to, and where Livingston, Oakland, and Genesee counties meet, there are enough options to make that a real choice. Brighton's Main Street faces the millpond. Howell's Grand River storefronts sit below the courthouse clock tower in buildings from the 1870s. Milford wraps around the Huron River with a walkable strip that pulls from five surrounding townships. All started as farming settlements, and the I-96 and US-23 interchange eventually made them commutable to Detroit and Ann Arbor without erasing the town centers. A brewery taproom in Brighton or a bookstore in Howell draws the same Saturday mix, families who came for the lakes alongside people whose families never left. South Lyon, Fenton, Highland, and Hartland fill the gaps with their own ice cream stops and go-to orders. The lakes run into the hundreds, most too small for a state map but big enough to shape a neighborhood's whole summer.
