Bay Shore
New York
Bay Shore sits where the Great South Bay narrows enough to see Fire Island. The ferries have run from Maple Avenue long enough that the schedule is part of how the town keeps time. That ferry traffic kept Main Street alive when other South Shore downtowns hollowed out in the eighties. It came back one storefront at a time, and the mix now feels less like a comeback story and more like a street that settled into its rightful place. The burger place on East Main is good enough to pull people from a few towns over. The wine shop down the block pours local vintages on a patio facing the bay, and the gift boutiques near the terminal stay busy with people killing time before a ferry. Babylon is quieter, more residential, set back from the water. Bay Shore leans toward the beach. The ferry horn sounds on the hour most mornings giving Bay Shore its own soundtrack.
