Arlington
Virginia
Arlington is twenty-six square miles right up against DC, and federal jobs are what built it. The Pentagon employs half the county one way or another, but nobody brings that up over coffee. They talk about the bakery that moved into an old house off Wilson Boulevard and whether the line is worth it on a Sunday. They talk about which brewery has the better patio. Clarendon is the dense part, the part where you walk everywhere and run into people you know at the coffee shop even when you're trying not to. Columbia Pike is more spread out, older storefronts, the kind of block where a lunch counter keeps the same hours it did ten years ago. Most of the county falls somewhere between those two speeds. People figure out which one suits them and then they just stay there. The regulars at any given place on a Tuesday morning are the same ones who were there last Tuesday. Nobody had to plan that.
